The syssitia was a ritual designed to forge bonds and served to bring people together through having soldiers who would fight together eat together in peacetime. This created an extended family of sorts, and led to troops “who fought with more bravery and a keener sense of shame than would have been the case with chance comrades” (Smith, 1870).

To create solidarity and prepare the team for battle, Chewse holds a Syssitia every Thursday. This is where one member of the ‘battalion’ sets a theme for the week and feeds his/her fellow soldiers, and another invites a friend to break bread with us.
